Floating Plant Islands

Floating Plant Islands encourage a balanced ecology both above and below the waterline, providing important benefits for ponds, lakes, reservoirs and canals.

Providing an instant habitat for small animals and insects, floating plant islands, which are based on our Lake Aid EcoIslands are an excellent addition to natural and man-made environments alike.

In a natural water body, floating islands help to reduce bank erosion in a number of ways. They give protection to vulnerable stands of emergent and marginal plants on lakes where the wash from sports and wave action may cause damage. They also provide sanctuary for many aquatic creatures and can function as markers or separation barriers for different activities such as angling, boating and skiing.

Island construction

Our modular EcoIslands are constructed of a UV resistant, HDPE framework with a galvanised steel weldmesh grid for base support. Buoyancy is provided by watertight tubes with specially weld-sealed ends. The surface of the islands can be covered with a mix of our pre-vegetated coir pallets or other appropriate substrate placed upon them.

Our islands are also available with a grazing protection cage to protect the growing plants from overgrazing from waterfowl, and a fish refuge; an anti-predation weldmesh cage can be included underneath the island with a mesh small enough to keep out larger predatory fish species and predatory birds.
